First Ride Checklist

Organizing your first ride is simpler than you think. This checklist walks you through the essentials.

Before the ride

1. Pick a date and time

  • The last Friday of the month is the traditional Critical Mass date worldwide
  • Evening rides (5:30–6:30 PM start) work well for commuters
  • Consistency matters more than the “perfect” time

2. Choose a meeting point

  • A well-known public location: park, plaza, landmark
  • Easy to find for newcomers
  • Space for people to gather without blocking pedestrian traffic
  • Ideally near bike infrastructure

3. Plan a route

  • 5–10 miles (8–16 km) is a good first ride distance
  • Stick to roads with lower speed limits when possible
  • Avoid highways and roads without shoulders
  • End somewhere social — a park, a bar, a waterfront
  • See Route Planning for more detail

4. Spread the word

  • Create a simple social media post with date, time, and meeting point
  • Post in local cycling groups, community boards, and neighborhood forums
  • Make a simple flyer — see Graphics & Materials
  • Word of mouth is your most powerful tool

5. Prepare materials

  • Print a few copies of your route (or share it digitally)
  • Bring a portable speaker if you have one (optional but fun)
  • Bring a basic repair kit: pump, tube, multi-tool
  • Consider spoke cards — see Graphics & Materials

Day of the ride

6. Arrive early

  • Get to the meeting point 15–30 minutes before start time
  • Be visible and welcoming
  • Greet people as they arrive

7. Brief the group

  • Announce the route (or that there is no set route, if that’s your style)
  • Remind everyone to ride safely and stay together
  • Point out any known hazards on the route
  • Encourage experienced riders to “cork” intersections if your group is large

8. Ride!

  • Start on time (or close to it)
  • Keep a comfortable pace — no one should feel left behind
  • Enjoy it

After the ride

9. Celebrate

  • Gather at the endpoint for conversation
  • Take a group photo
  • Thank people for coming

10. Plan the next one

  • Announce the next ride date before everyone leaves
  • Post a recap on social media
  • Ask for feedback and route suggestions
  • Invite someone else to help organize — see Growth & Continuity
